Coronavirus: What are the basic protective measures against this disease?

Everyone has been talking about it! As indicated by the World Health Organisation, “Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans.”

Nations around the globe are mobilizing to try to contain the coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 100K people and ended the lives of more than 4K others. Governments are taking their own measures to protect the public and have listed below a few protective measures that will cut off the spread of this virus. After all, the coronavirus requires our actions to pass on another person.

What can we do to protect ourselves and the others next to us?

There are a number of measures that prove to be very practical in terms of containing this pandemic outbreak.

1. Wash Your Hands on a Frequent Basis

Wash your hands on a regular basis either using alcohol-based gels or soap and water. This will make sure that viruses found on your hands are terminated.

2. Stop touching your Eyes, Nose & Ears

We use our hands to touch around and do stuff. This means that our hands have a really high chance of contamination. If we then touch our eyes, nose or ears the virus s transferred and we start feeling sick. Stop touching your face unless you wash your hands.

3. Keep yourself isolated

The World Health Organisation states that everyone should consider maintaining at least 1-meter distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. The reason is that the virus is passed on via droplets. A sneeze or a cough from someone affected carries a great risk of passing on the virus.

4. Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing

You should always follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

5. If you have any related symptoms, seek medical care early

If you or anyone around you experience fever, cough and difficulty breathing, then you should immediately seek medical assistance.

Following these simple protective measures will help to contain this pandemic virus. Moreover, we suggest that you stay informed with the latest developments & updates about Coronavirus, and always consult your healthcare provider.
